Piñones Bar Hop, Food Tour & Beach
Kiosk to kiosk down the coast road, eating the whole way.
- Duration
- 5 hours
- Region
- Loíza & Piñones
- Minimum age
- 18+
- Stops
- 5
Twenty minutes east of the hotel strip the road narrows, the pavement gives way to sand, and a line of wooden kiosks appears under the palms. This is Piñones, in the town of Loíza, and it is where San Juan actually eats on a Sunday.
We work our way down it. Alcapurrias, bacalaitos, pinchos off the grill, a stop for a drink, then another. Between kiosks there is a beach almost nobody photographs, and we stop there too.
No hiking, no climbing. Bring an appetite and a tolerance for being handed things.
5 stops, in this order.
- Head eaststart
Hotel pickup
Out of the metro area and over the bridge into Loíza — the heart of Puerto Rico's Afro-Caribbean culture, and the reason the food here tastes different from anywhere else on the island.
- Eat+30m
First kiosks
Alcapurrias and bacalaitos straight out of the fryer, from the stand your guide has been going to since before this was a tour. Cold Medalla to go with it.
- Walk it off+1h 40m
The beach stretch
A wide, open beach with almost nobody on it. Swim if you want, or sit under the sea grape and let the first round settle.
- Drink+2h 40m
Second round
Further down the road, a different bar with a different crowd. Usually music, usually somebody dancing. Rum is the local answer to most questions here.
- Last plate+4h
Pinchos and home
Grilled pinchos to close it out, then back to your hotel. You will not want dinner.
